Spanish for business
If you don’t want to study Spanish as a fun challenge, then perhaps — in your case — it’s about Spanish for academic purposes or Spanish for business.
Aside from many billions of dollars in trade with Indonesia annually, Spanish companies such as Zara, Meliá and Kidzania, Mexico’s Cemex and Cinépolis, and dozens of others from the Spanish-speaking world are active in Indonesia. Chile and Argentina, respectively, recently signed comprehensive trade agreements with Indonesia.
Spanish is often heard in Bali. ¿Y porque? (And why?) Well, because La Isla de los Dioses (The island of the Gods) has been very popular with Spanish-speakers for nearly 100 years.
Jakarta has a small but reliable network of Spanish-speaking translators, interpreters, tour guides, and business advisors. At some point you may be interested in joining them.
Spanish for academics
A growing number of Indonesians hold degrees from universities in Spain, including highly regarded business schools such as IESE and ESADE. Educational exchange between Spanish-speaking countries and Indonesia can be expected to flourish, going forward. Indonesian citizens who speak Spanish will have unique scholarship and work opportunities in Indonesia and abroad.
Meanwhile, Spanish is the most popular foreign language in the U.S. where universities often encourage all students to study a foreign language. Meanwhile, Spanish is one of the most popular second languages taught by international schools in Jakarta. For high school students, you can get college credit for your efforts via the AP Spanish Language and Culture credential.
Different “flavors” of Spanish
It’s true that Spanish is not spoken precisely the same way from one Spanish-speaking country to another. In particular, the Castellaño version of Spanish (from Spain) differs slightly in pronunciation and grammar from Spanish as it is spoken in the Americas. However, as a written language the differences are quite small.
Meanwhile, the Spanish-speaking world is vast (400 million speakers) and enormously diverse. It’s difficult to compare Texas with Spain; or Mexico with Argentina, despite the shared language connection.
