On test day you’ll be asked to evaluate one of these simple arguments. Next, you must write up your analysis of it in a brief discussion, about six paragraphs long. This exercise is called the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) and you’ll have 30 minutes to complete it. The AWA is scored separately from the rest of the GMAT exam and it’s up to the business schools how they use it.

One of the very best ways to prepare for the AWA  is to write a few of these types of essays, then submit them for editing. The editor will critique your writing and provide suggestions on how to adjust your approach.

The hours apply to the editing work and written critique sent by your editor, as well as any follow up discussion (in person or online).
